I've never seen the series and know nothing about it so she sent me some pics of the character so I can help her put together the costume.
I'm so pleased that the character and costume she's chosen appears be relatively simple to recreate - no elaborate foam crafting or makeup skills required.

She's on a pretty tight budget to put this costume together so a real leather jacket is out of the question but I think I've found a pattern for a reasonable facsimile of the jacket (with a few minor modifications).

The pattern I've settled on is Jacket Pattern 4305 by Lekala sewing patterns.

I think with the addition of patch pockets on the bust it should work for the cosplay.

Now to tackle the actual making of what is possibly the most complex garment construction project I've ever taken on.

This one definitely warrants making a trial version before cutting into the more expensive pleather (or whatever I end up finding/buying for the real version) so I'm off to the fabric store.

I'll keep you updated on how this one comes together. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

My significant other (SO) is a keen online gamer and through that has made friends the world over. When he said a few months ago that he would like to send an Aussie care package to a couple of his gaming friends in the US and asked if I could do something special and unique in fabric as an extra item to include in the package I jumped at the chance.

I know that my SO was initially thinking that I might do something with an applique design using the recipients' gaming logo, and in all honesty it probably would have been a quicker project had I done so, but applique really isn't my thing. I almost certainly could have done the design component for what would have been a multi-piece applique, but I'm just not confident with the actual sewing part - I can never seem to get the finish of an applique project just right no matter how hard I try. So for this project I just knew I had to do a paper-pieced design.

I'm not sure that my SO had a proper understanding of what I do as far as quilt design and construction before now so it was really nice to have him involved in the design process, seeing it come together and being so supportive and helpful as I worked on this one.

In the end the finished project turned out a bit bigger than either of us had initially thought at 30-inches square for the paper pieced logo panel plus a bit extra added all around, but I think it turned out to be a good size for either a lap quilt or a wall hanging (rod pocket added to back so it can be hung easily) and I'm really happy with the overall look of the finished piece. It's not identical to their logo, but I think its pretty close.

The season referred to as winter doesn't really happen here in the tropics; instead we have a dry season when the humidity drops significantly and the daily temperatures hover in the 18-31 Celsius range. It really is a beautiful time of year, and the sunsets are spectacular!

The cooler, dry weather means that it's much more bearable to work on projects that end up in your lap or draped across your body while you work - large quilts, knitting, crochet etc.

This dry season my go-to project has been a large crochet blanket. I'm working on the "As-We-Go" Stripey Blanket by Hannah Owens (Pattern on Ravelry).

As usual I haven't made things easy for myself. The pattern was originally designed as a throw blanket, but I decided to go all out and make it a full queen/king size blanket. I'm at the point now where I'm wondering whether that was such a good idea or not.

I love the colours I've chosen, and I love the pattern, but it's sort of busy looking and I'm actually beginning to think that an entire bedspread in this stripey pattern is just going to be too much.

So now I need to decide... do I continue with repeats of the pattern for the whole length of the blanket? or do I alternate with multiple rows of a single colour? and then if I do that, which colour? and which stitch pattern? Do I just have the stripey pattern for the top and bottom of the blanket with solid colour in between? or have 3 or more of the stripey panels?

Too many decisions.. Help! I need outside opinions in this one before the whole thing ends up as a never ending WiP.

Needing a portable project to keep myself busy while a passenger on our recent cross country road trip I took the time to acquire a new skill - Crochet!

I had planned to get some work done on a couple of cross stitch and embroidery projects while on the road, but just before we left I made an impulse purchase of some cheap ugly yarn and a set of crochet hooks. I also downloaded a free 'learn to crochet' e-book. It was probably a good idea in the end - it didn't take long to work out that moving car, bumpy roads and sharp needles are not a good combination.

My first crochet creation was the most hideous, mismatched pair of finger-less gloves ever. I almost frogged them but the monster adored them and wore them almost non-stop while we were in cooler climates. I'm really glad that first lot of yarn was cheap acrylic because the gloves needed washing several times after getting covered in dog slobber and hair, mud and grass. The acrylic held up well to to all of that.

My first crochet attempt. Finger-less gloves.

Feeling reasonably confident and inspired by my semi-success with the gloves, I made sure to pick up some slightly nicer (but still reasonably cheap) yarn during one of our stops and started work on a beanie for myself.

The beanie wasn't finished until several days after our visit to the snow, but I got it finished, and it turned out awesome! It's basic but it's squishy and soft and warm; everything a beanie should be.

Car-selfie taken only seconds after I wove in the last tail of my second ever crocheted item.

Sadly it's too hot to wear my beanie here at home in the tropics so it will probably not be seen again until our next adventure to the cooler southern climates, but I did it... I learned a new skill and made something for me, that turned out better than expected.

Since we've returned home I've turned my hook to some other bits and pieces including some Christmas decorations and a sampler afghan trying out a few new stitches. So now I have a a couple more works in progress and a whole heap of crochet creations on my to-do list.... crocheted clothes, slippers, hats, more blankets.... the list goes on. But that's OK. It's another portable craft that I can switch to when I feel like I want to change things up or need a break from other things.

They do say that variety is the spice of life, and as far as my crafty stuff goes my life is feeling pretty flavourful right now :)

Until next time
There was a lot of work (and love) went into making that quilt, and as I was making it I felt sure that it was the only one that I would ever do.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">But I should know by now that you never say never... because I'm about to do it again!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

The quilt is the Harry Potter Bookcase quilt (AKA The Project of Doom or PoD). Patterns are free and available over at my favourite fandom/quilting site fandominstitches.com. There is also a very active and welcoming facebook group.

We're running a quilt along over in the facebook group from today right through to the end of August and I'd love for you to join in with us.

You don't need to have any experience paper piecing, and your quilt doesn't need to be the monster size that my first one was. We're taking a choose your own adventure approach - you decide how big you want your quilt to be, how much time you have each week, what you want to include etc and there will be lots of encouragement and advice available in the group.

So head on over and join the facebook group to join in the fun (make sure you answer the question on joining, and have a read of the group rules)

As promised in my earlier post, here are each of the blocks in my Project of Doom / Harry Potter Boockcase quilt top.

It was important to me that I had every Deathly Hallow and every Horcrux represented in there and I achieved it! I think I also managed to get every movie/book represented, and the pets of each of the main characters too. It's definitely a busy quilt, but I think it's a good busy.

The actual bookcase portion is made up of mostly 10 inch square blocks, while the outer patterns are larger. Most of the patterns came from Fandom in Stitches. There are a few blocks where I've merged two or more patterns, one pattern from elsewhere (marked with #) and a couple of my own design (marked with *).

Some of the books and items have hand embroidery; this was all added before joining the blocks together and quilting.
Well its finally finished and its been gifted so I can post about it now. Yay! I've been itching to share this one with you.

The quilt is the "Project of Doom" (PoD) Harry Potter bookcase quilt from Fandom in Stitches and it's taken me 18 months on and off to get this king-sized quilt pieced, quilted and finished.

So without further ado.. here it is...

I can't thank Jennifer Ofenstein and the FiS community enough for the patterns, inspiration, ideas and support as I went through the process of making this quilt. It took forever, but I'm thrilled with how it turned out.

More details on the individual blocks and the quilting process in coming posts.

Until next time

After the overlocker came into my possession it spent a few weeks in the trunk of my car, and then several months languishing in a box while I focused on a few quilting project deadlines. Finally those quilting projects are done so I've been able to put the sewing machine away and pull out the overlocker for a bit of a play.

She's a really old Janome MyLock 234D and on top of my months of neglect, it looks as though its been a very long time since she's been used.

I spent a few hours today cleaning her up, oiling her and then more than an hour working out how on earth I was supposed to thread her (and lots of fiddling with a super long needle threader). After all that it was a major fingers crossed moment hoping that she would actually work.

And guess what? She chugged along almost perfectly the very first time!

All threaded and ready to go

She even stitches!

After a stitching a few scraps and adjusting the tension I was good to go...Except for one thing...

When I threaded her, I used four different coloured spools of thread so I could easily see if there were any problems, and which one it was that I needed to adjust. After spending an hour getting it threaded properly in the first place I wasn't keen on going through that process again!

Pinterest to the rescue! Instead of doing the whole re-threading process again I simply cut the threads at the spools, tied the new spool threads to the cut ends and sewed until all four of the new threads were coming out the other end.

So just over 3 hours of fiddling and I had myself a functioning overlocker.

And an hour after that, I've cut and sewn my very first usable item with it - a long sleeve raglan shirt for me!

My first overlocked item - a raglan shirt for me.
Apologies for the bathroom pic, its getting late and that's where the lighting was best.

I did need to pull out the sewing machine to hem the sleeves and bottom, but other than that it's all overlocked.

While I've made a few items of clothing for the monster and I've had lots of good intentions to make my own clothes, I think I can probably count on one hand the number of wearables I've made for myself (and actually worn). But this turned out awesome! I'll definitely be making a few more of these in different colours / prints.

I can see lots of knit fabrics in my future... shirts, tank tops, pants, pyjamas.. the possibilities are endless.

Until next time.
One step back...Do you ever feel like you're going so slow or having so many setbacks on something you're almost going backwards? Well that's how I've been feeling the past few weeks.

I have a deadline of early next week to finish one of my largest un-bloggable (for now) quilts, and that's pretty much all I've been working on for the last month so apologies for the absence. While I am not able to write much about the actual project (yet), I can use this post to vent some of my frustrations!

Even though I love my new DIY sewing machine extension table and it's doing the job well, I'm really not enjoying the actual quilting part of making quilts right at the moment. If I could just make quilt tops and have them quilt and bind themselves that would be fabulous! (yes I know I could pay someone to do the quilting for me but I really want to be able to do these things from start to finish all by myself).

My biggest issues with my current project have been fine-tuning the machine tension settings; and getting that balance between pedal speed and fabric movement under the needle for my free motion quilting just right. And if you were wondering what happens when you don't get those two things right.. I've put a pic below of the back of one of my practice pieces.. it's really ugly.

See the 'eyelashing' on some of the curves? That's because my speeds weren't balanced.

The other pops of darker thread showing through are because the machine tension settings are not right.

Of course both the eyelashing and the pops are more noticeable because I have a light coloured thread in the bobbin and a dark thread on the needle for half of this quilt (the other half will be dark top and bottom).

It took me days and days, and lots of practice pieces before I got both adjusted to what I thought would be acceptable i.e. to a point where I thought they were gone or were at least minimal enough to disappear when the finished quilt is washed and everything relaxes, crinkles and fluffs back up.

I'm doing Quilt As You Go (QAYG) for this project so I'm quilting individual sections (each about 70 x 11 inches) before joining everything together and then binding it for a finished quilt. Thinking I had overcome my issues with the tension and speed I really got stuck in and proceeded to do the quilting on five of the sections (I think all up there will be 10 or 11 sections in the finished quilt). There was only a little bit of popping and only a couple of really minor little eyelashes so I was pretty happy with that progress.

Over the weekend just passed I got the idea that I should probably try washing one of my practice pieces just to confirm that the little inconsistencies would actually be hidden after that process. So that's exactly what I did - I trimmed up one of my practice pieces, bound the edges so it didn't fray and threw it in with my weekly laundry.

On one hand I'm really glad that I did, on the other doing it has added to my frustrations and really annoyed me.

Practice piece - back (after washing)

Practice piece - front (after washing)

I didn't expect that the larger mess ups would be hidden, but I had really hoped that some of the smaller ones would be. Nope - they're almost all still highly visible.

So tonight, and probably tomorrow this is what I'll be doing to the three white backed sections I've already quilted (Jack is getting a heck of a workout):

Less than a week until my deadline and I feel like I'm almost starting over with the quilting!

But... I'm determined that this quilt will be finished on time and that it will be awesome, so I'm not giving up.

A darker bobbin thread will stand out against the white backing fabric more, but after doing some more testing, it shows significantly fewer flaws so I'm switching over to that set up for the entire quilt. I'm going to embrace the visible quilting on the back as much as on the front instead of trying for matching thread colour with fabric and trying to make it look inconspicuous. (It's not a bug - it's a feature!)

I've got two more evenings after tonight, plus Friday off work and the weekend to quilt, assemble, bind and wash/dry this quilt before my deadline of Monday afternoon ... IT WILL GET DONE.

Fingers crossed and hoping for all of your positive thoughts to help get me through this.

Until next time
Sometimes you need to change things up a bit. I was like that the other night.

I've been in a quilt finishing frenzy recently - frantically trying to get a couple of quilts finished in time for the local show in a month - it felt like I was getting nowhere fast and I sort of lost my mojo.

A quick sew was in order and this little earbud pouch from Dog Under my Desk was just the thing.

The great fabric the monster picked for the reverse of the earbud pouch

The monster chose the fabrics from my scrap stash, I just happened to have the perfect zip colour in my box of assorted randomness, and it came together in about half an hour.

This is a great, easy and super quick sew. I can see this little project becoming a regular in my repertoire of go-to last minute gifts.

Now back to quilting.

Until next time.

KK-Made-Ithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05183363925263680310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4954925777103002726.post-84469702918003231472017-06-18T21:42:00.003+09:302017-06-18T21:42:34.845+09:30I made a thing! Sewing machine extension tableI've reached the stage now with a couple of my WIPs that I will soon be doing a LOT of quilting (as opposed to just piecing quilt tops).

Each and every time I've done a quilt on the Brother in the past I've cursed that I don't have an extension table to make the quilting process a bit easier. I've had a look online and at my local stores and haven't been able to find anything that comes in at under $100. With cash a little tight at the moment, and WIPs needing finishing I decided to put on my big girl DIY pants and make something myself.

So off the the local hardware store I went (twice actually!). I came home with:

600 x 900mm MDF customwood

plastic cabinet legs

3mm plastic tubing

Glue

A bit of measuring, cutting and gluing later and I'm done! A benchtop extension table custom made for my sewing machine (and larger than any of the commercial ones I've looked at).

Sometimes I need a little reminder that sewing and crafting tools are not the only tools in existence and this project was just the thing. All up it came in at about $35 of materials and completed in just a few hours - win!

Now lets see if it holds up to the volume of quilting I'll be doing over the next month or so.

Until next time.

I designed this paper-pieced pattern to complement the quilt layout presented in the Fandom in Stitches Goblin King, a Labyrinth-themed Quilt & Stitch along.

It is an absolute monster of a block, finishing at 60 inches long by almost 15 inches tall. The intention was to create a title block that you could put inside the outer border of the quilt, at either the top of the bottom of the original layout.

If you are planning on using this block in conjunction with the QAL layout, you might want to add extra sashing around it so the spacing between this block and the character blocks doesn't look too uneven. You will also need to adjust (increase) the length of the outer border strips for the finished quilt.

Download the pattern here if you want to give this pattern a go, and don't forget to share pics of your finished work. I love seeing how others interpret my designs - no two ever end up the same.

Don't forget also, that all the patterns from Goblin King: Labyrinth Quilt and Stitch Along are available over at fandominstitches.com.
We've made it to the very centre of the Labyrinth and final week of official event patterns.

Of course the only way to finish off a 'Goblin King' event is to feature the Goblin King himself, Jareth, played in the movie by the late, great, David Bowie.

Character of the week

This week I'm straying a little bit from my usual 2x versions of embroidered blocks.

I had the opportunity to test Michelle Thompson's amazing paper pieced pattern. Michelle always does amazing portrait faces, and her pattern for Jareth is no exception. I had a great time putting this one together and I'm thrilled with how it turned out.

Week 21 - Goblin King: Labyrinth Quilt and Stitch Along

I did also do an embroidered version of Jareth. The embroidery for this week was designed by Jennifer Ofenstein and also turned out fabulously. Unfortunately my phone camera really doesn't pick out the lighter blonde and skin-tone colours on white fabric very well.

Week 21 - Goblin King: Labyrinth Quilt and Stitch Along

As the centre-piece of the event and the eventual quilt, the pattern for Jareth is designed to fit a 12 inch finished square (12.5 inches unfinished). If you are embroidering, make sure you cut a larger square of background fabric and trim to size once you are done stitching.

Both the paper-pieced and embroidery patterns are available to download now from fandominstitches.com

Quilt Assembly - Centre section and final assembly

As well as the patterns for Jareth, this week on fandominstitches.com you will also find the assembly instructions for the centre panel of the quilt as well as the final layout and borders.

The centre panel of the layout of course focuses on Jareth, but he is not the only character that still needs to be included in the quilt. We also need to sash and join the two door knockers, humongous and three goblins.

Centre-section assembled

Once the centre section is assembled, we have everything ready to finish the quilt top. Join the left and right side sections to the centre section, and then add the top and bottom sections.

#Labyrinth Quilt 1 - all character sections assembled

By this stage it looks very much like a finished quilt, and I guess it could be left there if you really wanted to; but I wanted to finish this one off exactly as per the pattern instructions. That simply means adding inner and outer borders around the joined panels.

And here it is .... TADA!! The finished quilt top

#LabyrinthQuilt
from patterns and instructions available on fandominstitches.com

I adore how this has turned out. it's so much better than I had expected.

So yeah, I've got a finished quilt top, but we're still not quite ready to let the Labyrinth go just yet. Stay tuned next week for the additional designs from the design invitational.

Until next time.

I forgot to take pics of the individually sashed blocks, but the joined sections can be seen below.

Top and Bottom Section Assembly (from Week 19)

Week 19 was the start of actual sewing to put the quilt together.

A silly mistake

I was so excited to get to this part and get sewing, but when I pulled out all my completed blocks, I found several of them to be looking a little dingy. Sweaty hands + white fabric + embroidery hoop = not quite white fabric. It was irritating me. It was then that I made made a decision that I'm now seriously regretting... I tried hand washing the unfinished blocks and of course some of the colours ran!

Wiseman's bird with reddish halo from the thread colours that have run.

Toby with some extra "shading and shadows" thanks to colour runs.

I've learnt my lesson. I'll use exclusively DMC embroidery thread from now on (only the non-DMC ones ran) and don't wash without colour catcher sheets in there (even hand washing).

Frustrated but still keen to move on to assembly I've left them as-is for now and pressed on. Hopefully a good wash once the quilt is finished and bound, with several colour catcher sheets in with it, will sort it out. It will be fabulous if that does work but as this is neither a gift or a show quilt I'll still enjoy the end product even if it doesn't.
So anyway... moving on...

Lets get sewing

Assembling the top and bottom sections of the quilt were the focus of this week.

For the top section I took the finished and trimmed to size embroidery block for Sarah, the Worm, a Goblin, Wiseman & his hat and Toby and added sashing to each as per the assembly instructions.
It really feels like I'm making a quilt now rather than just making lots of individual blocks!
Up next... side sections from Week 20.
The posts on fandominstitches.com over the past three weeks for the #labyrinthquilt have included not just the character of the week, but also parts of the assembly instructions for the quilt.

As you know I'm doing 2x embroidered versions of the quilt. I am determined to have one of those finished with the quilt and stitch along; the other may need to wait a bit to be finished as I have a few other projects and deadlines coming up.

I've been a bit slack in posting my pics, so I'm about to make up for that with a series of 3 posts at once and lots of pics to catch up.

Cutting Instructions (Week 18)

Week 18 of the quilt and stitch along included the Goblin 4 patterns and also the cutting instructions.

Three different fabrics are required for the finished quilt - a dark, a medium and a light. The light is the background of the pieced or embroidered blocks that we've been making over the last few months while the medium and dark will be sashing.

For the light purple blocks I have a picture in my head of the fabrics I want to use for sashing but I haven't been able to get my hands on just the right ones yet, so that is the quilt that will go on the backburner for a little while.

Choosing dark and mediums to go with the the white background blocks was easy - I knew right away I wanted black and grey for that one.

I'm using a black with grey swirls for the dark fabric, and a grey with random small leaf-like pattern for the medium.

This week I'm pleased to be able to present another of my own embroidery designs for the Goblin King: Labyrinth Quilt and Stitch Along - Humongous!

I'm not sure whether he actually qualifies as a character in his own right, being essentially a metallic shell controlled like a giant puppet by a couple of goblins, but here he is.

In addition to my embroidery design, Angela Gross has also designed a fabulous paper-pieced version of Humongous.

Both patterns are available to download now from fandominstitches.com

Here are my two stitched versions of Humongous - he's designed to fit a 6 inch finished square and I've put quite a bit of detail in there so he's possibly just a little more intricate and time consuming to stitch up than some of the patterns in recent weeks.

If you're going to give my Humongous embroidery a go I suggest that you start with a larger piece of background fabric to allow for ease of hooping and trim it down to 6.5 inches when you're ready to assemble your quilt. I also strongly suggest not using more than about 2 strands of embroidery thread or the detail of the suit will be difficult to achieve.

That's it from me this week. I really should post about the assembly so far, but that will have to wait until next time.

Toby, taken from his bed by the Goblin King, is the reason for Sarah's whole journey through the Labyrinth. This week he's the feature character in the Fandom in Stitches Quilt and Stitch Along

But Toby is not the only thing going on this week! With only three more weeks of scheduled pattern releases there is so much happening it's hard to keep up.

I forgot to mention last week that we're starting on assembly / finishing instructions. Last week's post on Fandom In Stitches included the fabric cutting list for the final quilt layout in addition to the weekly character patterns.

Tuesday also saw the announcement of a 'Design Invitational' for the Labyrinth Quilt. For anyone not familiar with what that is, it's simply an invitation for designers to submit additional Labyrinth-themed patterns. Submissions close on 30 May and all the invitational patterns submitted will be made available on the website on 31 May for people to use when making their own Labyrinth style quilts .

I've been a bit obsessive about this project so I've already started on at least a couple of patterns for the invitational and I'm sure that there will more great designs coming from other designers as well.

Now back to this week's patterns... Patterns for Toby have been designed by Anita McDowell (paper-pieced) and Mel Moore (embroidery). My versions of the embroidery pattern can be seen below.

The geese I made last week will be flying across the width of the quilt. But when I tried also laying out some geese flying up and down to widen the quilt it was clear that wasn't going to work. The geese going both side-to-side and up-and-down made it really hard to focus on any one element. It was as if the geese were trying to draw the eye both everywhere and nowhere at once.

I obviously needed to come up with something different for the sashing at the sides of each block. I came back to my original thinking for the sashing:

not plain sashing;

keep the challenge blocks as the focus; and

leave some clear space between the blocks and the elements of the sashing.

I also now had an additional requirement of making sure the side sashings were the same width as the top and bottom sashing or the overall layout would look strange.

A simple (and blurry) pinwheel block
made with 4x HSTs

I played around with a few different ideas and eventually settled on 4 inch square pinwheel blocks with a border of 2 inch wide pale grey.

There seems to be lots of different variations on a pinwheel, but the one I've chosen is simply 4x HST blocks arranged to form a pinwheel.

Yes, I know I've cursed about all the HSTs in the main quilt blocks. All the cutting and precision trimming was driving me nuts, and here I am making more of them! But I found a way to cut down on the fiddliness slightly - I used the 'Magic 8' method to make all of the required HSTs for my pinwheels. I've post a quick rundown of that method separately.

See how I made lots of Half Square Triangle blocks using the Magic 8 method.

Again in the interests of keeping a bit of clear space in the sashing, and because I really only have three focus colours plus background fabric to work with I decided to only do three pinwheels per sashing and separate them with strips of background grey. Each strip of pinwheels would then be stitched to an 8 inch cornerstone block and the quilt top could be assembled.

And here's where it started to go a bit wonky...

Each of the Challenge blocks have an unfinished size of 16.5 inches square. Once all joined together to sashings, borders etc with 1/4 inch seams, the challenge blocks should be finished at 16 inches square.

I only wanted 3 pinwheels per Challenge block and I wanted them to line up in three spots - with the top edge of the Challenge block, with the bottom edge of the challenge block, and with the centre-line of the Challenge block.

I knew I wanted the pinwheels to have a finished width of 4 inches (the same as the flying geese I've done previously).

So the math I used is as follows - please don't use these calculations - I'm showing you where I mucked up here!...

3 x 4 = 12 = the total finished length the pinwheels take up on each block

and

16 - 12 = 4 = the total extra space in between the finished pinwheels that I need to match up with the length of the Challenge block

and

4 / 2 = 2 + 0.5 seam allowance = 2.5 = the necessary width of each background fabric strip used above and below the middle pinwheel

Unfortunately I didn't even notice my mistake until I'd already made all the pinwheels, cut all the in-between fabric and stitched together the sets of pinwheels.

I'd also cut my 8.5 inch (8 inch finished) square blocks of background fabric for the cornerstones by that time.

Layout of each block -
Challenge block as main focus, and how each of the
sashing pieces should fit around it.

Can you see where I went wrong yet?

I was figuring out everything based on the finished length of the Challenge block - I should have used 16.5 - the UNfinished length!

So I ended up with 12 strips that were each exactly 16 inches long. Once I took away the seam allowances, they would only be 15.5 inches long.

Half an inch might not seem like a lot, but I can tell you that when you're trying to make everything line up as close to perfect as possible, it can feel like a mile!

After much cursing, and the sashing strips going into the 'time-out corner' for a day or so, I resolved myself to working with what I had.

Rather than pull them all apart and put in new separating strips (which would all need to be cut fresh), I decided to just add a teeny strip of fabric to the ends to make up the extra length, It's not ideal, but it works.

Thankfully the extra bits of background fabric are not too noticeable in the overall scheme of things and so it all worked out in the end.

Once those pinwheel side sashings and cornerstones were done I was able to put the quilt top together, and here it is!

NQC Quilt Block Challenge quilt top - with added pinwheels and flying geese sashing.

I'm absolutely thrilled with how it has come together. It's even better than I imagined it.

But....

That is only a double sized futon the quilt top is laying on, and it is only draped over the back about 8 inches (the width of the top flying geese sashing).

It's probably big enough to lay out flat on the top of a queen size mattress, but I also need some drape to cover the sides of the mattress. It's still not big enough at this point and I'm not going to call it finished yet.

The easiest way to achieve the extra length and width I need right now is going to be to add an outer border.

Not sure what design I'll end up with for the border yet. I'm going to need to take a bit of time and work out how best to use the little bits of feature fabric I have remaining to put together some thing that ties in with the quilt top as it is, but also isn't completely boring and plain.

Watch this space.

Until next time.

For the main blocks I used a traditional two-at-a-time method of making the HSTs. But I wanted to use lots of smaller HST blocks for the sashing and border on the blue/grey yellow version of the quilt.

The volume of HSTs I had in mind for the additional parts of the quilt meant that I either needed to spend weeks sewing, cutting and ironing blocks, or I needed to find another way to get them done more efficiently.

As always Pinterest came to the rescue and I decided to give the "Magic 8" method of making HSTs a go.

The premise of the Magic 8 method is that you start with two larger squares of fabric, but unlike the traditional method where you sew two lines and cut once across the diagonal of the square, with the Magic 8 you sew 4 lines and make 4 cuts resulting in 8 HST pieces.

I've put together a series of pics below to show how I got tonnes of 2.5 inch (2 inch finished size) HST blocks made reasonably quickly.

(Different sized finished blocks are easy to achieve with just a different starting square size - a simple google or Pinterest search for magic 8 triangles will come up with lots of tables and formulas to help you work out what size to start with for your desired finished size)

Definitely faster to sew and cut lots of HSTs at one time, but still requires lots and lots of ironing and trimming. Unfortunately I still haven't found a way around those things that works for me yet so if you have any ideas for that I'd love to hear them.
In my last post about the NQC Challenge quilts I mentioned that I'm planning something different with my grey/blue/yellow version of the quilt.

I love how the Christmas version, completed as per the challenge instructions, turned out. But for this one I want something large enough for at least a queen size bed.

I had a couple of options:

Add more blocks (either repeats of the originals or find others to supplement); or

Increase the sashing widths and add borders.

I couldn't choose which original blocks to repeat; and while there's tonnes of block patterns out there using half-square triangle foundations, I didn't want to just use any block, or stray too far from the 'feel' of the originals.

So I'm going with the second option. And because I can never do things the easy way, I've decided that plain extra-wide sashing to increase the length and width just won't do.

First up is increasing the length of the quilt...

Week 6 Challenge Block - reminiscent of flying geese

My aim for now is to lengthen the quilt with extra wide sashing, but not add more full-size blocks. I also want to make sure that I keep the challenge blocks as the focus so I plan to leave some clear space between the blocks and any decorative elements I add to the sashing.

Making reference to the Week 6 challenge block I've decided to add some flying geese between the rows of primary blocks.

The challenge block used half square triangles to create a pattern that looks like the traditional flying geese block.

I probably should have learned another new skill and made more traditional flying geese, but I've returned to my preferred piecing method and done a gaggle of paper-pieced geese blocks.

One of the bonuses with doing paper-piecing is that its almost impossible to mess up the points. :) On the down-side, I didn't quite get the same sense of achievement completing all those lovely matching points with paper-piecing as I was getting when the traditional / main blocks went to plan and all lined up properly.

All up I've made 24 lots of flying geese blocks with finished size of 4x8 inches each. I then joined two at at time to create twelve strips of flying geese (8 "geese" per strip). To each of those I've added an outer border of 2 inches wide strips of the pale grey fabric.

Eight geese

The flying geese will end up at the top and bottom of each of the challenge blocks and add 32 inches to the length of the overall quilt.

Laying out the geese sashing between
the blocks to see how it looks (not joined yet)

I'm really happy with how this is coming together so far. Next up will be adding to the width of the quilt and putting it together.

Watch this space.

I still don't think we've seen enough of the Goblins of the Labyrinth yet, so I'm excited that this week we've got another couple to choose from.

This week's patterns have been designed by Kylie Pecarina (paper-pieced) and Jennifer Ofenstein (embroidery) and are available now on fandominstitches.com.

Here are my two versions of the embroidery pattern.

The Christmas quilt top has come together really quickly - 3 inch sashing between the blocks, join the blocks into rows and then join the rows into a completed quilt top. Easy Peasy!

Here's the quilt top done - the breeze came up and fluttered the top around just as I took the pic, but you get the idea. All that's left to do with this one is to choose a backing fabric and quilt it.

I've got some plans for additional stuff with the grey/blue/yellow quilt. That one is taking a bit longer to complete and I'll be sharing progress on that one over the next few weeks,

Until next time

As you can see, this week's character as we travel ever closer to the end of the labyrinth to the is the enigmatic Four Guards.

Like the Wiseman and his hat from week 5, this week's characters are never apart so I guess they can be considered as a single character. As four creatures though, they do make for an interesting (and possibly slightly more complex) pattern for the week.

As usual you have two options - a paper pieced pattern by Kylie Pecarina or an embroidered version by Jennifer Ofenstein.

Both versions are sized to fit a 6 inch finished block (6.5 inches with seam allowance), but as always if you are hand embroidering be sure to cut yourself a more generous piece of background fabric for ease of hooping and trim it down to 6.5 inches when you're done.
